Super proud to present Global Local: Staten Island aka La Isla Bonita this Sunday in New York City in conjunction with Staten-based arts collective I founded ISLA, Lina Montoya’s LMP Project and California non-profit, Sol Collective. Besides Shaolin being my hometown – read this piece I did in 2013 for Cluster Mag about the Island arts scene – it’s an extremely vibrant place for arts with many creative people from different places, proud to work with what they have and be themselves.
With New York City being bought and sold everyday a little more for the soulless, Staten Island is still a place where you know you’re neighbors, where there’s remanence of cohesion in such a big city even with all our differences. In a world where developers are “betting” on Staten Island to be the next Gold coast, La Isla Bonita is a cultural statement directly from the community; put on with little to no budget, yet tons of community wealth from over a dozen organizations and artists to literally make it happen.
