If you’re looking for the best FREE cultural events happening in New York City, look no further than Ariana’s List. The passion project-turned-visionary force of cultural curator Ariana Hellerman, I happily receive this email once a week in the summertime to know all that’s going on for FREE in all five boroughs the upcoming week.
Ariana and I – both with past experience in the field – agree that the “Presenting Arts” world ought to be driven by the richness of the communities it’s charged with serving as opposed to the egos and attitudes reflected by those who have traditionally dominated the culture which is platformed in those cities.
In the spirit of that, Ariana is launching another project of hers this week which is SO FUN! Check out Accordions of The World. Direct from her:
“For the next nine Wednesdays (July – August), you can find me at Bryant Park from 6– 8pm. Ten accordionists will play each week in different pockets of Bryant Park. Come for a stroll; leave with a taste of music from around the world. On Friday, August 28th, two days after the end of the series, for the first time ever, we’ll have an accordion festival! Six bands from different places (all with an accordion, of course!), will play from 4 – 10pm. Sample Cajun, Slavic, French, Argentine, Colombian, and Irish music, with solo accordion interludes during the transitions. It’ll be a good time.”
